Show Nurses’ Aides Finish Red Cross Course Fifteen Boise women whose only reward is the satisfaction of making a patriotic contribution to the war effort, were graduated form an 80-hour Red Cross course as volunteer nurses’ aides Tuesday afternoon at a capping ceremony at St. Margaret’s hall. The ceremony was held during a tea given by Miss Emily Pine, St. Luke’s hospital supervisor. The graduate nurses aides include: Mrs. Virgil McGee, Mrs. Robert Newhouse, Mrs. C. A. Witter, Mrs. Donald Harrison, Mrs. John Rothchild, Mrs. E. J. Kueser, Mrs. Ralph Butterfield, Mrs. Alec Campbell, Mrs. Walter, E. Smith, Mrs. Carl Kitchen, Jean Cunningham West, Mrs. George German, Mrs. John O’Donnell, Mrs. Percy Pinder and Mrs. Bernard Lemp, Jr. The volunteer nurses’ aide corps was organized to conserve time, skill and energy of the graduate nurses since many hospitals are short of registered nurses because of demands for them from the Army and Navy. The course requires 34 hours in classroom work in demonstration and theory and attendance at lectures given by several Boise doctors. This was supervised by four Boise registered nurses, Mrs. E. R. Bennett, Mrs. Leila Ely, Mrs. Harry Maxon and Mrs. William H. Neilley. The other 46 hours of the course were spent in actual practice work in the two Boise hospitals. Co-chairmen for the nurses’ aides are Mrs. Frank A. Rhea and Mrs. Clay Koelsch. After the training period is over the volunteer nurses’ aide must give at least 150 hours of service each year in a local hospital and in case of an emergency she must give full time wherever needed. There is no financial remuneration for this service. “The volunteer nurses’ aide will never take the place of the nurse.” Explained Mrs. Rhea. “Her very title emphasizes the fact that she is an assistant, not an independent worker. Some of the duties she may perform are making bed, giving baths, preparing patients for meals, admitting and dismissing patients and caring for supplies.” At the tea Tuesday, Carl G. Bowden, chairman of the Boise Red Cross chapter, spoke on the Red Cross volunteer services and Mrs. R. J. McCabe spoke on the nursing profession and the importance of developing auxiliary help. Mrs. E. R. Bennett and Mrs. Leila Ely poured. Mrs. Rhea presented nurses’ aides caps to the graduates and Mrs. George Meier, Red Cross official who is a member of the committee, presented the certificates. Student nurses served during the tea hour. Special guests included Sister Laurent and Sister Carmichael of St. Alphonsus’ hospital; more than 40 attended the tea. Mrs. Rhea announced a new nurses’ aides class will begin soon. Women interested in the course are asked to telephone Mrs. Rhea at 1537 or contact her at her home, 120 West Idaho street.
