RED CROSS TO SEEK $75,000 SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 27 (AP) A fund of $75,000 to support an en¬larged national defense program will be sought by Utah chapters of the American Red Cross in the annual roll call Nov. 11-30, Allen E. Kolb, state representative, an¬nounced. The Salt Lake county Red Cross chapter, whose funds come from the community chest, will not participate in the drive. Utah's 1940 Red Cross member¬ship was 28,502, Kolb said, and workers hope to enlist at least one adult in every Utah family during the current drive. B. L. Fisher is roll call chairman for Brigham City, Oscar Yarborough for Bountiful, and L. Wesley Robbins of Ogden, for Weber county, Kolb said. Red Cross Week Set Nov. 11-30 Governor Maw proclaimed Nov. 11-30 as annual roll call of the American Red Cross. “Through participating in the annual roll call every patriotic citizen can discharge a part of his responsibility toward making he defenses of our country secure,” the proclamation read in part. Allen E. Kolb, Red Cross field representative for Utah, announces a campaign opening Nov. 12 to enroll 90,000 Utah school children as members of the Junior Red Cross. Last year 78,542 students in 335 Utah schools were enrolled, he said. CHAPTERS WILL DISCUSS DRIVE Several Counties Intend Jo Send Envoys to Red Cross Conference Plans for the national Red Cross roll call will be outlined for Weber, Cache, Box Elder, Morgan, Rich, Davis and Tooele counties next Monday, Nov. 3, at ten a. m., when the chapter, roll call and publicity chairmen of the chapters from those counties meet in Utah Power auditorium, Ogden. E. G. Bennett, chairman of We¬ber county chapter; L. Wesley Robbins, roll call chairman, and W. F. Smiley, publicity chairman, will represent Weber county at the planning convention. A standard first aid class or¬ganized by Weber county chapter is holding meetings in room 204 of Lewis school with Carl Taylor as instructor. The course is open to adults, without cost. The number of students who can take the course is unlimited. Should more applicants seek the training than Mr. Taylor can prepare, ad¬ditional instructors will be pro¬vided. "In these troubled times it be¬comes necessary for the American- people to prepare themselves in every possible way to meet any emergency that might arise," said Mrs.*G. T. Greenwell, Weber county executive secretary. "We are anx¬ious to have as many men and women trained in first aid as we can get. What they learn in these classes today may be what saves their lives or the lives of their loved ones tomorrow." Wesley Robbins, coun¬ty campaign chairman. He said these have been summoned to a meeting Friday at seven-thirty p. m. in room 404 of Hotel Ben Lomond to report progress in per¬fecting, their district organizations and to receive plans and final in¬structions for prosecution of the county drive for funds. Weber county has been given a quota of $15,000 as its portion of the national quota of $50,000,000 for Red cross war relief. Mr. Robbins pointed out that 85 per cent of this county's quota will go to the national relief fund and 15 per cent will remain for war relief production work in the local Red Cross workshops. 'By Every Family' "Red Cross memberships should be held by every family in Weber county," Mr. Robbins declared, "and liberal contributions to the war relief fund are expected from every citizen." Our district chair¬men are making every effort to have their sales armies completely mobilized by January 5, when the county campaign is officially scheduled to commence. Educa¬tional printed messages will be distributed to all homes in the county by county-wide Boy Scout groups, and appeals will be made by speakers at services in the various churches. "Today, as never before, the Red Cross needs the wholehearted sup¬port of every citizen. Now is the time to demonstrate our high morale, our unity and our de¬termination, not only to back our men who are fighting for us, but through our contributions to the Red Cross to insure practical aid and comfort to our wounded, homeless and suffering fellow citizens who may be overtaken by the horrors of war." |
