ARC 400-8 Sept. 1939 Code H 1 HOSPITAL BED SHIRT Materials - Bleached muslin, medium weight. Findings - 1/2 or 5/8 inch tape, thread No. 60, Red Cross label sewed on pocket. Instruction for Making Hems All hems on the outside of garment. Seam All flat seams and on the outside of garment. Shoulder seams back over front. Armhole seam body over sleeve, under-arm seam front over back. Pocket On the left side 4 inches from center of garment and 10 inches below the highest point of shoulder. Put on with double stitching. Neck facing Put on the outside of shirt and over the hems. Tape Three (3) sets of tape 9 inches apart. Cut tape 18 inches long and then out in the middle on a bias for the ends Method of making Make hems on backs at the same time attaching tapes. The three tapes on the left side are put on with one continuous stitching leaving no ends to tie. Mark position of these tapes with the upper one even with top of neck facing. Place tap under the hem about ¼ inch. Stitch hem just beyond the further edge of tape, then turn back tape over to the outside edge of hem. Fasten tape securely to outside edge of hem by turning the garment and stitching around edges of hem. Stitch hem full length. Turn tapes over toward outer edge of hem and make second stitching full length of hem and across tapes just a trifle from the first stitching full length of hem and across tapes just a trifle from the first stitching. The upper tape on right side is sewed on the finished neck facing and is simply folded under and stitched twice on top of facing and in line with the other tapes. Put pocket on front. Sew up shoulder seams. Place neck facing on the inside. Baste smoothly in place, and stitch around neck, then turn to outside and stitch all edges once only. Put on upper right hand tape. Sew in the sleeves, then sew underarm seam and put hems around bottom of garment and sleeves to the outside. Length of complete garment, 40 inches. Pattern No pattern available from headquarters. DIRECTIONS FOR FOLDING AND SUNDLING: Place garment flat on table, front down; fold sleeves inward to center, then fold garment in half lengthwise, then fold in half and tie securely in bundles of five.
