The Red Cross Chapter volunteers have already set a high standard in previous sewing, which is expected to be equaled or surpassed on this emergency job 2 UNIOR RED CROSS PARTICIPATION IN WAR RELIEF PRODUCTION: In many Chapters the Junior Red Cross members are active in the War Relief Production Program. National Headquarters rec¬ommends that production chairmen confer with Junior Red Cross chairmen before sending in their requisitions for materials for use in the next quota, and where there is an indication that the Juniors wish to participate, yardages for their use should be re¬quested. ARC 688, American Junior Red Cross Sewing for Refugees, is designed to aid in the planning of the Junior Red Cross program. Listed in the leaflet are the garments recommended, and a substan¬tial quantity of the government materials purchased will be suit¬able for use in the Junior program. PATTERNS: American Red Cross patterns for the various refugee garments are now available for purchase. These patterns have been designed and manufactured by commercial companies. They are classic models, simple in design and easily made. They will cut to advan¬tage and are readily adaptable to various sizes and figures. The patterns may be purchased through a central distributing agency in New York. Order blanks for use in purchasing the recom¬mended patterns are available through National Headquarters. National Headquarters does not have any patterns for distribution. In addition to the recommended patterns we will continue to list certain commercial patterns as examples of types. Any of these patterns should be purchased locally at the regular retail rate. There will no longer be any free patterns or patterns at a discount. It is not the desire of National Headquarters to regiment the War Relief Production Program by specifying patterns, but rather to aid you by providing patterns that will cut economically and ones that can easily be followed. We encourage individuality in the trimmings and have arranged for a wide selection of fabrics in many colors and patterns. Attach small scraps to dresses for future use in mending. All of the garments listed are requested in a range of sizes. The following ratio is suggested: In every one hundred women's and misses' dresses, sizes 14-50, a ratio of 2 to 1 of sizes 14-16-18-44-48-50 as compared with sizes 40-42-46. In every one hundred girls' dresses, sizes 2-12, a ratio of 2 to 1 for sizes 2 and 4 as compared with sizes 6-8-10-12. Cutting and Assembling—It is recommended that a sub-com¬mittee on cutting be appointed and this sub-committee should be responsible for the cutting of all garments to be made for the refu¬gee work. We strongly advise that some one person be on this com¬mittee who is an expert in the process of quantity cutting. This person should know how best to place the pattern pieces so that the material will be cut to the best advantage. When the pattern pieces are cut, they should be assembled to make one garment and at the time the cut material is distributed to the volunteer sewers, complete details regarding the making of the garment should be included.
