INFANTS’ KNITTED WEAR Equipment Needed: Needles-2 needles to fit Red Cross Needle Guage marked for socks and infants’ knitted wear. Gauges available from Headquarters. Yarn-3 ply pink, white, or blue yarn; 3 ounces are adequate for 1 sacque, cap and bootees, 2 ounces additional are needed if 2 sacques, 1 cap and bootees are made. Scale 7 ½ stitches to the inch, 9 ½ rows to the inch. Make a sample to find out how many stitches are required for you to knit an inch. If your scale is not that given here, adjust the number of stitches cast on to fit your own scale. PLAIN SACQUE WITH STRAIGHT BODY Set up 60 stitches and knit plain 5 inches, then add on each end of the needle 30 stitches for the sleeves, knit 3 inches, then bind off 20 stitches in the middle of the row for the neck, leaving on each side 50 stitches. Leave one side on an extra needle and knit 3 ridges on the other side, then cast on 10 stitches for the front and knit 3 inches. Bind off 30 stitches for the sleeve and knit the front to match the back in length. Make the second front he same way. Cuffs: Pick up across the sleeve, holding the right side toward you, and rib one inch deep by knitting 2, purling 2, then knit plain 1 ¼ inches more, binding off with the right side toward you, as this makes a turn-back cuff. Border: After sewing up the sides of the jacket pick up the stitches around the bottom and knit plain for 1 ½ inches, widening at each end of the needle every other row on the next to last stitch to form the mitre for the corners. Then pick up the stitches down the front with the right side toward you, and knit plain for 1 ½ inches, widening on the lower end every other row, on the next to last stitch to form the corner. Collar: Pick up around the neck and across the border in the front with the wrong side toward you, and knit 1 row plain, then make a row of holes. (Throw the thread over the needle, then knit 2 stitches together, knit 3 stitches, repeat from star to star to the end of the row. On the return row use the thread thrown over as a stitch.) Then knit 2 inches for the collar. Bind off with the right side of the jacket toward you. Run wash ribbon through the holes around the neck. After there are 289 stitches on needle (ending with a row of P), K the first 40 stitches of next row, slip them to a strand of yarn for half of front: K the next 64 stitches and leave them on needle for one sleeve; slip the next 81 stitches to a separate strand for back, the following 64 stitches to one strand for other sleeve, and the last 40 front stitches to one strand.
