July 1943 SPIRAL SOCKS, BED SOCKS, KNEE BANDS, STUMP SOCKS SPIRAL SOCKS (Cod K-1, Foreign War Relief) (“ AF-14, U.S. Army) (“ AF-15, U.S. Navy) Equipment Needed: Yarn: 3 ozs. 4/14 sock yarn of suitable color. Needles: Four double-pointed needles to fit the Red Cross needle gauge for socks. Gauges available from area office. Instructions for Making: Cast on 64 stitches on 3 needles. 20 on 1st needle, 20 on 2nd needle, and 24 on 3rd needle; then join. Knit 2, purl 2 for 3 inches. Then add 1 extra stitch and knit 4, purl 4. The extra stitch will move the rib over one stitch every round, thus making the spiral pattern. Knit 4, purl 4 continuously until the sock measures 18 inches from begin¬ning. Decrease for toe: Knit 4, knit 2 together. Repeat all the way around. Knit 4 rows plain. Knit 3, knit 2 together. Repeat all the way around. Knit 3 rows plain. Knit 2, knit 2 together. Repeat all the way around. Knit 2 rows plain. *Knit 1, knit 2 together. Repeat all the way around. Knit 1 row plain.* Repeat from * to *. Draw thread through remaining stitches (there should not be more than 15 stitches on needles at this point), take off needles and pull thread tightly, weaving in well to hold. Sock should now measure 19-19 1/2 inches. Tack pair together loosely at ribbing in such a way that hand can be inserted for inspection. Attach two or three yards of the yarn for darning purposes. Chapter label should be sewed loosely on inside at top of one sock BED SOCKS (Code AF-68) Equipment Needed: Yarn: 3 ozs. 4/14 sock yarn, white, cream, or gray. Needles: Two single-pointed needles to fit Red Cross needle gauge for socks. Four double-pointed needles to fit Red Cross needle gauge for socks (for ribbing). Instructions for Making: Cast 128 stitches on one single-pointed needle. Knit plain (knit every row), increasing 1 stitch at the beginning of every row until there are 146 stitches on needle. Knit 4 rows without increasing, then start to decrease as follows: K 70 stitches, K 2 stitches together, K 2 stitches, K 2 stitches together, K 70 stitches. Next row: K 69 stitches, K 2 stitches together, K 2 stitches, K 2 stitches together, K 69 stitches. Continue in this way, decreasing 2 stitches in the center of every row until there are 60 stitches on the needle. Divide stitches on three double-pointed needles. Join ends and K 2, P 2 for 4 inches. Bind off loosely, knitting the knit stitches and purling the purled stitches. Sew up the sole and back of sock to ribbing. Tack pair together loosely at ribbing. April 1943 Code AF-57 MAN’S “V” NECK SWEATER SLEEVELESS U.S. Army Air Corps, and Marine Corps Equipment Needed: Yarn: 10-12 ozs. 4/8 SWEATER YARN, OLIVE DRAB. Needles: 2 shingle-pointed needles to fit the Red Cross needle gauge for heavy sweaters. Gauges available from your area office. Needles slightly smaller may be used for the ribbing. Scale: 5 stitches to the inch, 6 rows to the inch. Make a sample to find out how many stitches are required for you to knit an inch. If your scale is not that given here, try a smaller or larger needle until you obtain this scale. If you have to use a different sized needle from that called for above, it will not in any way alter the garment provided you knit 5 stitches to the inch and 6 rows to the inch. Measurement: Small: Chest 32-34. Length shoulder to bottom-23 ½ inches. Medium: Chest 35-37 “ “ “ “ “ 24 ½ Large: Chest 38-40 “ “ “ “ 25 ½ inches This garment is worked up the back and down the front with no shoulder shaping. INSTURCTIONS FOR MAKING Body Back: Small Medium Large Cast on…. 80 88 96 stitches Work in ribbing of knit 2, purl 2 for 4 4 4 inches Work in stockinette stitch ( knit and purl alternate rows) for 10 11 12 inches With the exception of the first and last 2 stitches which should be knit ( garter stitch) to make a neat underarm seam. End with a knit row. To Shape Armholes: Bind off 3 stitches at the beginning of next two rows. Next 1st row: K 5, P to last 5 stitches, K 5. 2nd row: Knit entire row. 3rd row: Same as 1st row. 4th row: K 5, K2 together, K to last 7 stitches, K 2 together, K 5. Repeat these 4 rows twice (12 rows in all). There should now be on needle…..68 76 84 stitches Kepeing garter stitch border at armhole edges (by knitting first and last 5 stitches in each row), work in stockinette stitch until armhole measures…..8 8 8 inches From first shaping. End with a knit row. Next: A. Knit 5, purl 12 15 18stitches Knit…..34 36 38 stitches Purl……12 15 18 stitches Knit 5. B. Knit entire row. Repeat A and B for 1 inch, ending with A row.
