Show Marriott-Slaterville City History January 2015 Marriott-Slaterville Monthly History January 2015 We enjoyed a White Christmas, but snow has been nearly nonexistent ever since. January felt more like spring than the dead of winter. The National Weather Service reported that the snowfall total at the Salt Lake City International Airport for January was the fourth lowest since 1885. The January 2015 issue of The Pioneer Post included Mayor Keith Butler's annual State of the City message: • The Mayor pointed out that during the past year the City completed a trail head parking area on 1700 South, and a new parking area at the Marriott Park. • One of the challenges in local government is to manage all of the state and federal mandates placed on us. The state has decided to impose stricter administrative requirements and sewer regulations. These mandates are unfunded and often burden communities by increasing fees or taxes. The new sewer mandate requires the City to prepare and implement a Sewer Management Plan, which staff is currently preparing for the City Council to consider. • Road construction projects are another challenge. New safety standards and other requirements have increased construction and maintenance costs, while road revenue has declined. Utah has approximately an $11 billion shortfall for needed road projects. • The Mayor is working with staff to plan 2015 road projects, infrastructure and park projects, as well as community events and many other operations of our local government. He acknowledged the many volunteers, staff, the Park Committee, Planning Commission and City Council. They all work together to provide the most efficient and effective local services. Planning Commission Meeting-January 20. 2015: Planning Commission Meeting was cancelled for January. City Council Meeting-January 15. 2015: Scott Van Leeuwen was nominated to serve as the new Council President for 2015. He in turn nominated Dennis Illum to serve as the new Vice-President of the Council. Both were approved unanimously. Vice-President Illum has served as Council President for 13 years. The Audit Report for FYE June 30, 2014 was approved by the Council. The Independent Auditor reported that the City is in very good shape and expressed thanks for cooperation of the administration during the recent audit. Mayor Butler also distributed the written quarterly financial report and reviewed it with the Council. The City Council approved adoption of Resolution 2015-A to renew the Comcast Franchise Agreement, with amendments as recommended for a 10-year agreement. Council also approved adoption of Resolution 2015-B granting an extension on the residential solid waste collection and disposal contract with Waste Management, with amendments as recommended. Mr. Morris presented the annual training on the Open Meeting Act, Unlawful Discrimination and Sexual Harassment Prevention to Council members. |
