Show Flinging in the rain First Utah Open draws 70 disc golfers to wet, demanding course By BRANDON GARSIDE Standard-Examiner staff MARRIOT-SLATERVILLE — Despite the chilling rain and cold wind, Mulligan's Golf Course hosted the first-ever Utah Open on Saturday, featuring professional and amateur disc golfers from around the country. Paul Ulibarri, a native of Phoenix and one of disc golf's best players, won the two-round tournament with a total score of 111, finishing three under par. "1 felt pretty smooth all day," said Ulibarri. "1 left a couple of shots out there each round, but for the most part, I capitalized when I needed to and didn't make huge mistakes." Avery Jenkins, a California native and 2009 World Champion, was also among the 70 players in the tournament, and recognized that not only was the tournament challenging because of the weather, but the course itself is also demanding. "It was a tough course, regardless of weather. I think even on a nice day, this course is really challenging and really tough," said Jenkins. "There's a lot of basket placements that are really close to out of bounds, being the sidewalks or the water, or sand bunkers. It's a very difficult course regardless of the weather. With the weather See DISC, Page4B Keaton LeBlanc, from Orein, follows through while holding a cloth to help keep his disc dry as he tees off Saturday at the Utah Open disc golf tournament held at Mulligan's Golf Course in Marriott-Slaterville. The rain added to the challenge of the course, participants said. |
