True. Two-thirds of blindness and vision loss in the population are women. The good news is that three- fourth of visual impairment is preventable or treatable. It involves eating well, getting regular exercise, and getting regular dilated-eye exams. Nutrition for your eyes includes a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Studies over the last 10 years have found that vitamins rich in carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin may help to decrease a person's risk of vision loss, such as macular degeneration. • Dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, Swiss chard, peas, and Brussel sprouts • Yellow/orange vegetables • Oranges and mangos • Healthy fats such as Omega 3 in fish and walnuts (allows better absorption of lutein and zeaxanthin) • Eggs (the most absorbable source of lutein and zeaxanthin] Physical activity can improve your overall health and improve eye health. • Moderate intensity • 30 minutes 4-6 days a week Regular eye-exams are important to catch eye problems early. • If you are over age 60 visit your eye doctor every 2 years. • It is important to have a dilated-eye exam for early detection of macular degeneration. Here are a few more precautions you can do for your eye health. Protect you eyes from the sun. Wear a hat with a brim and eye glasses labeled "UV absorption up to 400nm". Wear protective eye gear when working with chemicals, machinery, or playing sports. Don't smoke, quitting smoking will help reduce your risk of developing eye disease and greatly improve your overall health. Maintain normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels. If you are experiencing vision loss there are community services that can help.
