Show SWAT units from the Weber County Sheriff's Office were on scene Monday night at the Pilot Travel Center on 12th Street as a reportedly armed and suicidal man barricaded himself in a vehicle, which caught fire after overheating. Sigh of relief. Suicidal man to get help he needs OGDEN — The Weber County Attorney's Office is screening evidence from a 5 Vi-hour standoff between a suicidal man and law enforcement that ended when he peaceably surrendered early Tuesday.' Around 7:30 p.m. Monday, the 42-year-old man barricaded himself in a red pickup truck at 167012th St. in Marriott- Slaterville across from the Pilot Travel Center. Sheriff's deputies had pulled him over while they were on their way to his residence in unincorporated Weber County. When he refused deputies' orders and it was discovered he was armed with a shotgun, several agencies, including the Ogden-Metro SWAT team, were dispatched to secure the area and negotiate with the man, according to the Weber County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's Lt. Lane Findlay said authorities had encountered the suspect multiple times in the past month after he made similar suicidal threats. During the standoff the man overheated his engine, spilling smoke into the air and causing the vehicle to catch fire. Officers then shot out the back window using a bean-bag round to prevent the man from suffocating. Around 11 p.m. the man fired his shotgun into the air, then fired a second time a short time later. The standoff ended around 1 a.m. after members of the SWAT unit successfully negotiated with the man to get out of his truck. An armored vehicle was used to get closer to the man's driver-side window so they could negotiate face to face, Findlay said. At least one family member was on scene to help talk the man into surrendering. The man gave up and he was transported to the hospital for mental health commitment. The County Attorney's Office said Tuesday it will screen the case for possible criminal charges. Authorities closed 12th Street between 1900 West and Interstate 15 for the duration ' of the standoff. About 20 cars and their drivers were stranded at the Pilot Travel Center and not allowed to leave until the situation was resolved.
