Show Standard Examiner lay, September Off-duty officers tear down barn Ogden police help elderly woman salvage antique wood By ANDREAS RIVERA d-Examiner staff OGDEN — Lorna Huggins appreciates the work Ogden police officers do on duty — and off. In July, Huggins, 70, sold her Marriott-Slaterville farm property. Before moving, she said she wanted to disassemble an antique barn to salvage the wood. Her son is a woodworker who makes benches, shelves and other things from old wood. When her son called a friend to help out, Huggins said she never expected a large group of Ogden police officers to show up. "I was so overwhelmed. They were just the nicest people," she said. On July 13 and 14, about 40 police officers came over in two shifts to take down wooden planks and the aluminum roof, said Ogden Lt. Kevin Cottrell. They loaded several trailers full of the wood from the barn, which was more than 100 years old. "They did it on their own time. None of them had to," Huggins said.. She recently contacted the Standard-Examiner to praise the good deed. Cottrell said he and the other officers were happy to help on their off-duty time. Huggins and her family are supportive of the police department, particularly the K-9 unit, he said. "It's a scary job — I wish people would appreciate them more," Huggins said. She said she hopes people will focus more on the good the police do rather than on the negative attention they often receive in the media.
