Show Golf From 1C Christian Academy golf coach. "She was in 9th grade and they didn't have a golf coach," he said. Gianna graduated last year and Murillo is still there. Aside from his job as the school golf coach and the mission his children are on, Murillo names countless other ways at-risk youth have benefitted from his promise to God at the time his son was diagnosed. In addition to coaching golf, Murillo is employed as the chaplain at Layton Christian Academy. He has served as a pastor of the Assemblies of God church for 25 years. His service has included pastoring a church in Durango, Colorado, where he started his efforts to serve those who are at-risk with special programming. Fifteen years ago, Murillo and his wife, Anna, started a church in west Salt Lake called New Hope International Church. The church included those who spoke 100 different languages, Murillo said. His efforts to provide programs to meet the needs he found in his congregation led to a full-time ministry, called Synergy in Action, encouraging churches in the area to band together in such efforts. "Synergy in Action really started because I was keeping my promise because of my son," Murillo said. In addition to his work as a golf coach, Murillo runs the Utah Dream Center with churches around the region. Five years ago, Murillo and his wife stopped their pastoring efforts at their church to concentrate on helping those in need through Synergy in Action. The two started efforts called Dream Centers throughout the Wasatch Front. The 14 Dream Centers have become a way to create central locations for addressing real needs, such as food and clothing, medical and' dental needs and helping those who have been in jail find ways to rebuild their lives. The latest Dream Center was created to be in conjunction with Ogden's Genesis Project. But a change in philosophy has Murillo encouraging those with such centers to change the names of the facilities to better reflect their individual goals. The Genesis Project effort now is moving and transforming. Plans are to re-open the Dream Center at the church's previous home at 270 12th Street as a Serve Center starting Jan. 30. Starting that day and for one hour between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. each Friday, the center will have an open house where community members may visit and get familiar with the services that will be offered Monday through Friday at the center. "In an atmosphere where they feel welcomed and honored, people will get their needs met," Murillo said. Included in the plans for the Serve Center will be adopting an Ogden school most in need of help from the community, he said. You may reach reporter JaNae Francis at 801-625- 4228.
