Show 1970, what would you say the single most influential factor was that shaped 25th Street? The disembarking of railroad passengers for shelter, food and entertainment. It was impossible not to stop in Ogden, to transfer from one railroad to another. People needed food, entertainment, a place to sleep. Because of the railroad, it was a naturally evolving commerce. Q: And today? For lack of a better term, it's simply nostalgia. We look hack on this era of bad behavior, scandal, politics and realize that in the architecture, the story has survived. And now it's a place that's essentially harmless, we know we won't be in danger if we go down there. So we go seeking the scandalous vibes. Wc all like the idea of being the present-day beneficiaries of the people in our stories. Q: In your book, you discuss some fascinating details about the people who shaped Ogden in its early beginnings. Who's your favorite historical figure from Ogden to talk about? Mayor Ilarman i'ecry stands out to me. There seems to he so much local legend about him, hut I really enjoyed discovering what his actual accomplishments were. He was controversial, but he made things hum, and he made Ogden vibrant. I also gained a great deal of respect for Rose Davie, the determined brothel owner. She turned out to be much more complex and interesting than 1 realized, and I decided to devote an entire chapter to her. As a friend of mine said, she had an incredible determination to succeed in the face of massive public opposition. That's a quality you can't help hut admire. Q: Corruption in local government and law enforcement is a pretty major theme in your book. Do you think this helps or hinders the popularity and the image of the city today? At this point, it's so far in the past, I think people just chuckle at it. And it's good for people to understand what happened from another perspective. As I explain in the hook, during Prohibition ... local, state and federal agents were supposed to be cracking down on all the vices, but governments were too cheap to continued on 26 Wasatch Viow | 25 |
