Show Saturday, February 14,2015 STANDARD EXAMINER Sbfaith Churches prepare for Ash Wednesday, Lent By JaNAE FRANCIS Standard-Examiner staff MARRIOTT- SLATERVILLE — When it comes to turning his thoughts inward for the Lenten season, Gary Phillis gets a head start every year. Last week, the First United Methodist Church volunteer and president of the church's corporation, was working on burning more than a dozen palm fronds left over from last year's Palm Sunday down to ashes for the coming week's Ash Wednesday. It's a service he's offered the church since 2001. "That tradition means a lot to me," said Phillis, who also is chairman of the church's administrative counsel and trustees. "While I am (burning the palm leaves), it gives me a lot of time to reflect." He said Lent for him gives him time to think about what he is and where his life is headed.
