Show LiVe Well Senior's Health A NEWSLETTER WITH IMPORTANT HEALTH INI = 0RMATI0N FOR SENIORS November 2015 November—National Healthy Skin Month The winter months can be challenging for people who suffer from dry itchy skin. The dry air from indoor heating and the cold winter winds can increase the discomfort of dry irritated skin, however with proper care there is relief. For some Seniors dry skin is more than uncomfortable dryness to the hands, face and feet Their skin gets so dry it becomes flakey, cracks, and can bleed. Eczema and psoriasis often becomes worse during the winter months. It is important to maintain a good winter skin care regimen, for both men and women, so that your skin stays moist and healthy through the winter months. Hot baths and soap can increase the drying effect on skin. Washing increases the loss of the body's natural oils . Use less harsh drying soaps and only use where needed (such as under arms, groin, and feet). Also avoid long hot showers as these will also deplete natural oils. After showering or bathing pat body dry and immediately apply generous amounts of moisturizer to seal the water in before it evaporates. When choosing a moisturizer know the greasier the better, the cream should be oil based. It will better hold the moisture in the skin and keep it lubricated. Oils such as baby oil, mineral oil, and bath oil also work well just remember to apply shortly after bathing. To be effective it is recommended that you use a skin lubricant two or more times a day. Stay hydrated, it improves blood circulation. Maintaining a diet full of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables will also contribute to skin health. Foods high in vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, Selenium, and Omega-3 fatty acids will help keep your skin looking and feeling good. Using a humidifier will help prevent your skin from drying out by putting more moisture in the air. Place several small humidifiers throughout your home; this helps disperse the moisture more evenly. Don't forget the sunscreen. Your skin can be damaged by the winter sun combined with snow glare. Apply a sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply often if you stay outside for a long time. Pay close attention to your hands and face. Your skin can remain healthy through the beautiful winter months with a little extra care.
