He lived all of his life on 12th Street, growing up in a farmhouse that still stands today at Ogden Nature Center. Some of his fondest memories were of working with draft horses on his family farm to harvest sugar beets and haul hay. He started driving a team at the age of seven. Carl married the love of his life, Mae Louise McFarland, on June 12, 1941, in the Salt Lake Temple. Shortly after, they moved across 12th Street to what would be home for the remainder of Carls 93 years. That house, with only two small rooms, at one time was home to the couple, their first three children and Louises brother in addition to several dozen newly hatched chicks, which were brooded in a box behind the coal stove. In that house, which grew along with the family, the couple raised eight children. Carl served in the Army during World War II, shipping off to Korea in 1945. After the war, he continued to farm and worked at Quaker Oats. Later, Carl became a journeyman electrician, a field hed work in for more than 40 years. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, fulfilling many callings, including Counselor in the Bishopric, Stake High councilor and Bishop. He also served many years in the Spanish and Italian name extraction program and was a dedicated home teacher to the very end of his fife. Carl spent his retirement with Louise working around his farm and spending time with his large family and many friends. He told great stories and had an amazing memory, recalling everything from his kindergarten teacher at Marriott School to his friends at Weber High. Carl passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2015. He was the last of his generation to be born and raised in Marriott. His life can be best described with these words: hard work, integrity, faith...and hard work. Carl was preceded in death by his wife; daughter, Nancy Ritter; granddaughter, Tammy Barrow; great-granddaughter, Sarah Mitchell; parents and four sisters and two brothers. He is survived by his children, Launa (Blaine) Barrow, Brent (RaeDene) Hodson, Charlene (David) Ottley, Joan (Roger) Poulsen, Ronald (Wendy) Hodson, Terrie (Kendell) Phillips and Judy (Gary) Symes; son-in-law, Thane Ritter; 32 grandchildren, 76 great-grandchildren and six great-greatgrandchildren. Carls family wishes to thank all those who cared for him in his final days, especially Julie, Aaron, Danny and Karen. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at the Marriott-Slaterville Chapel, 250 N. 1500 W.
