Show Native son Finally... the music world comes around to Ryan Shupe's way of thinking By Stacey Kratz Photos by Brian Nicholson any fans of local favorite; Ryan Shupe can tell you something about him: Ogden native, started playing bluegrass fiddle as a tot in ;i family band, grew up in the music industry, struck out on his own with a "Rubber Band" whose members have evolved over the years, had a national country hit a few years ago with "Dream Big." But ask them what Shupe's music sounds like, and you'd better settle in for a while. One fan called it "early Mumford and Sons, with banjo instead of mandolin, and happy instead of sad." Another likened it to the humor and multilayered meanings of liarenaked Ladies — and still another pantomimed a gloriously messy mashup of country, pop and folk music. Shupe himself has trouble categorizing his sound, referring to everyone from Lyle Lovett to Dave Matthews Band in the attempt. But that might he because, from the beginning. Shupe has actively resisted falling into a genre with his music, from his debut album, "If I Were a Bird," to his newest release, "We Rode On," which comes out Nov. 6. "Of course, I write the music, so it always has a certain vibe that comes from that," Shupe said, describing his sound as acoustic and rootsy, hut with a rock or pop feel and often a whimsical or humorous bent. continued on 10 Wasatch View I 9 |
