Show Marriott-Slaterville City History October 2015 Cory Glen Furse, 33, passed away on October 20, 2015. Curtis and Cassie Tonks are parents of a baby girl, Rae Tonks, born on October 15, 2015. The Standard Examiner Editorial titled Democracy Shrugs, dated Friday, October 2, 2015 bemoaned the fact that three cities in Weber County canceled municipal elections this month, including Marriott-Slaterville. Around 75 municipalities in Utah called off local elections due to candidates winning by default. They feel that people are turning away from politics because they see it as a negative; something that breeds corruption at worst, boredom at best. Calling it "a real shame" they said that city politics is the level of government that impacts us the most, and encouraged us to vote. On Monday, Octobers, 2015 the Standard Examiner featured an article on Matt Nielsen. Matt, 22, who was born with Down Syndrome, is currently serving an LDS mission at the Deseret Industries in Harrisville. Matt also had some heart defects that were very common in Down Syndrome children and his parents were told that surgery would be required when he was older. However, when he was just 4-years old, doctors found a brain and spinal cord tumor which were benign, and were able to remove only about 20 percent of it, leaving Matt on a ventilator, fed by a gastrointestinal tube and confined to a wheelchair. When his brother Brayden left on a mission Matt started talking about how he was going to go on a mission. Thinking that would not be possible, his mother learned about the Young Church Service Missionary Program and they applied. YCSMs serve as close to full-time as their capabilities and situations allow, usually for 18 to 24 months. Dennis Lester was booked into the Weber County Jail on Thursday, October 15, 2015 for suspicion of torture of a companion animal. Residents who recently moved into the neighborhood near 1200 W and 950 S reported that their neighbor admitted to them that he killed their cat. When questioned by the Weber County Sheriff's Office, Lester said he tried to pet the cat when it was near his property after his dog chased it. When he tried to pick it up it bit his finger and he chased it across the street and cornered it underneath a neighbor's porch. When he finally got a hold of the cat he killed it and put it in a trash bag and threw it away. Torture of a companion animal is a 3rd degree felony that carries a maximum sentence of 0 to 5 years in prison. A tip from a concerned student at Venture Academy foiled a possible plan by another student to do a drive-by shooting at the school. On Monday afternoon, October 19, 2015, administrators at the public charter high school located in Marriott-Slaterville were alerted to a scheme that involved three 15-year-old students. Another student, who was not involved with the alleged plot, overheard details of the plan and notified school officials. Two of the juveniles implicated the third, their friend, as having a plot to acquire ammunition for a gun so he could do a "drive-by and shoot up the school." One of the boys possessed a loaded ammunition magazine as well as a box of .22 caliber shells. He said the clip had been given to him by his friend and that other boy also claimed to know of the plan and was found in possession of a large folding knife and razor blades. |
