Show #> LiVe Well Senior's Health A NEWSLETTER WITH IMPORTAr JT HEAL" m INI =ORMATION FOR SENIORS Happy Holidays! December 2015 Stress less and enjoy rhe holidays more. Stress in life is common Eor everyone of all ages. Children experience stress related to school, new situations and just growing up. Adults feel stress related to family and work expectations. Seniors also feel stress even though they are retired and their family is raised. Holidays are a time of for shopping, baking and gathering with family and friends. It should be a joyful time but these activities and holiday parties can disrupt personal daily agendas, exercise schedules and regular healthy meals. These interruptions can compromise health and increase stress. Seniors can stay healthy, reduce stress and avoid the holiday blues by using these simple tips during the holidays and the rest of the year. 1. Keep well rested. The holidays can be a time for long days and demanding schedules. Allow yourself time to rest after shopping, traveling, and party preparation. You will enjoy your friends and family more if you feel refreshed. 2. Make healthy choices. It is easy to overindulge in rich foods during the holidays. Plan balanced meals and keep healthy snacks easily accessible. Consider eating a light lunch if there is a big dinner planned for the evening. 3. Stay hydrated. It is easy to become dehydrated during the holidays, which can cause weakness and illness. Keep water handy and take it with you when shopping or traveling. 4. Keep exercising. It is easy to let your exercise schedule slip during the holidays. Cold weather can also make it harder to get out and walk. Drive to an indoor mall and take a few laps while window shopping. The thythm and repetition of walking decreases anxiety and improves sleep. 5. Shake up traditions. Cooking for a large crowd and cleaning the house can be a source of stress. Consider passing tradition on to the younger generation of family members. If you can't let it go assign family members to help prepare part of the meal and help clean both before and after the event. 6. Decrease gifts. Purchasing gifts for family can be a huge stress for Seniors especially those on a fixed income. Consider having a family grab bag where everyone contributes a gift. 7. Don't over schedule. If you ate feeling stressed it is okay to say no and slow down a bit. Remember the holidays are a time to celebrate with those you love and cate about. Enjoy the activities that are important to you and create happy i«i memories to carry you through the year. Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital |
