VERL POLL ENJOYS MOUNTAIN GREEN AND HER SNOW CAPPED PEAKS Mountain Green, the Beautiful When the first Pioneer settlers gazed on the Valley of Mountain Green in the mid-1850's, they must have been a little awed and frightened at the prospect of establishing homes and rearing families in such a remote area. Majestic mountains reared their snow-capped peaks to the west and south. The turbulent Weber River thundered its way through the narrow, twisting gorge overhung by formidable cliffs. Delicately balanced rocks on the steep slopes seemed ready at any moment to plunge down on the unwary traveler below. The soil in the valley was rich and deep and the rolling hills were dressed in verdant green, giving promise of abundant crops, if the weather would permit. The valley floor was traversed by five brawling streams whose cold, clear water gave promise of plenty for irrigation purposes. Long before the white man discovered the great western country, before Father Escalante passed hereby in 1776, and the great United States declared itself a free Country, the Indians had used Weber Canyon as a route to Promontory Cave 5
