Trapper's Loop Road In 1848 Howard Stansbury, Captain of topographical engin¬eers for the United States Army traveled with his men on horse¬back over the divide from Ogden Valley to what is now Mountain Gr¬een. But his men were not the first st to use the route. A well worn Indian trail followed approxim¬ately the same route of the pre¬sent Trapper's Loop Road, according to scant information. In the early days the road was used by a scouting party sent out by President Brigham Young whose mission was to explore the Bear Lake country. It was also used by miners for transporting coal Coalville to Ogden at one time. During construction of the Union Pacific Railroad through We¬ber Canyon, many Ogden Valley men found employment on the constr¬uction gang. They traveled over the divide to and from their jobs. Farmers also took advantage of the situation and delivered farm products via the road to the railroad construction camp. Emigrant wagons rolled over the divide and mountain men and trappers from the Hudson Bay Fur Company used the trail when they had an encounter with the American Fur men during the 1820's. In 1930, during a violent storm a cloud burst in Weber Can¬yon filled Devil's Gate with rocks and debris. The only way to get out of the valley was over the divide into Huntsville, or travel to Echo and take the route through Emigration Canyon. Trapper's Loop was a lifesaver. 34
