GRINNING WITH DELIGHT During the Spring of 1928, Dee and Muriel Shupe had an interesting experience with a coyote which revealed its clever traits. They had a young calf staked in the barnyard and were awakened early one morning by its frantic bawling, A coyote was chasing the frightened calf around the stake, nipping at Its heels, harassing it in every way possible. Dee and Muriel hurriedly dressed and taking a rifle, headed for the barnyard, hoping to get a shot at the pesky animal. The coyote trotted up the hill a short distance, squatted on its haunches and watched his enemies struggle up the hill. Every time Dee raised the rifle to shoot, the coyote would dart up the hill a little further, sit behind a bush or rock and wait. This farce was continued until the coyote had lured Dee and Muriel to the top of the 'basin. Every time he sat down to wait he seemed to be grinning with deli¬ght at their discomfort. When the little game of hide and seek ended in the far reaches of the basin, the wily coyote suddenly vanished into the underbrush, leaving two very frustrated people to trudge back home, empty handed. THE EAGLE AND THE DEER Eagles are big game hunters, to this fact Harry Wilkinson can testify. Three times he has watched a real life drama unfold on his farm in Mountain Green, when a deer has been killed by a golden eagle. Harry reported that the eagle begins circling above the deer, then dives onto its back, clamping its talons in a deadly vise on the animal's neck just in front of the shoulders. The spinal column is severed and the deer drops dead. When the golden eagle has completed its hunting prowess the bald eagle takes over, driving all other birds and flesh eating animals away until it has had its fill. Then it soars away into the sky, leaving the feast to be enjoyed by others of what is left of the hapless deer.
