Show Jessie Pettet and Her Family 1916 WILLIAM PETTIT (Front) ALICE, JESSIE ANN, ERIC, (Center) KATHLEEN, ARTHUR THE WILLIAM PARRISH HOME IN MOUNTAIN GREEN WHERE THE PETTIT FAMILY LIVED When Jessie Anderton Pettit moved to Mountain Green in 1916, she brought three stalwart sons, a strong testimony of the Gospel, an outstanding musical talent and a brogue that delighted everyone who conversed with her. The sons were Arthur Harry, 22; Eric William, 19; and William Arthur, 12. Two daughters, Jessie Kathleen Beckstrand, 28; and Alice Mary, 16, lived in Salt Lake City where Mary continued her schooling. Kathleen's husband, Alma Beckstrand, bap¬tized Jessie and Kathleen while serving a mission in Great Britian. Jessie Ann came from a wealthy and cultured family and had appeared in many piano recitals. She was also gifted in dramatics. Born in 1861, at Greenwich, Kent, England, her parents were George Thomas and Sarah Falkner Anderton. While working in the Pettit Wholesale Drygoods Store in Wallingsford, Berk¬shire, she had met the owner's son and partner, William Arthur Pettit. Following a five-year courtship the young couple was married in April of 1887. Their first child, Jessie Kathleen, was born in February of 1888. One day the nurse took the tiny infant for a ride in the carriage. Kathleen was dressed in her finest clothes. A young woman struck up a conversation with the nurse and offered to tend the child while the nurse did a bit of shopping. She had been repeatedly warned to never leave the child with strangers, but she had forgotten. Suddenly remembering the warning the nurse dashed out of the store to see the stranger swi- 290 |
