Show KATHLEEN MARGY JOHN John and Alice first lived in Salt Lake City where Jonathon, Avon, Harry and Alice were born. The family moved to Hoytsville for a while where John farmed for a living. Here Cole and Kathleen were born. They returned to Salt Lake City where John worked in insurance. But he was convinced that the farm was the place to raise a family. Consequently, in Dec¬ember of 1924 the Wilkinson family moved to Mountain Green. John had purchased the farm on the bench and the house was the delightful Rosehill Cottage whose original owner and builder was Joshua Williams. It was bitter cold that December of 1924 and it took the family all day to make the trip as they followed the moving van over the dirt roads which were rutt¬ed with ice and snow. It was especially bad through Devil's Gate. STRUGGLE BEGINS: Alice takes up the story: As soon as we arrived at the big, old rambling farm house Dad built a roar¬ing fire in the kitchen range, and Mother began washing dishes and cleaning out cupboards so we could have supper. This was typically Mother—she was 'Mrs.Clean'. The next morning the struggle for a livelihood began. There was nothing on the farm--no implements and no livestock. And you couldn't run to the store and buy things as there was no store to run to. Transportation there was practically impossible. Even Christmas was late that year as Dad had to go to Ogden on the train to see that his family had a Christmas. Mother and Dad had been raised in hard working families and they raised their own family the same way. We had to carry water a block or so from a well, straight up a hill, as there was no water in the house. We did the family wash on the washboard. We heated the water on the stove in a boiler and EVERYBODY worked. But our parents were great! Mother played with us children making fairies in the snow and went sleigh riding right along with them on homemade sleds. There were homemade skis, too, 319 |
