Show active in Church and Civic affairs. On May 1, 1920, Orson and Leah bought a large ranch in Morgan County. The ranch was on the dividing line between Peterson and Mountain Green. Their home must have been on the Mountain Green side because that became their Ward. The chapel was about three miles away but many times the family walked to Church and back home in order to attend services. Orson was ordained a High Priest, March 13, 1911, by Joseph Fielding Smith. He served as Counselor to Bishop Joseph A. Parrish of the Mountain Green Ward, Morgan Stake. The family suffered many hardships during the depression but they survived through hard work and intelligent thriftiness. The family lived in Mountain Green nine years, and during that time served faithfully in every calling in the Ward. Leah had a lovely singing voice. She served in the various organizations and she and her husband joined in all socials and outings. They were sorely missed when they moved. In May of 1929 they sold their Morgan County ranch and moved to Salt Lake Valley where they spent their remaining days. They belonged to the Hunter Ward most of the time. During his life Orson served as Superintendent of the Sunday School, the MIA, was Bishop at one time, and filled many other positions. He was set apart as a patriarch and was serving in this calling at his death, serving in both the North Jordan and Oquirrah Stakes. He also served as a justice of the peace for many years. He was a gifted public speaker. Leah sang in the Salt Lake Tabernacle Choir for many years. In their later life they served as temple workers as long as their health would permit. All three daughters and their families live in the Great Salt Lake Valley. Edythe married Hugh L. Hales, Louise and Frank Macchione were wed and Ida married Stanley Johnson. Orson passed away, December 11, 1964, and Leah lived until Mary 7, 1967. 304 WINTRY SCENE AT THE HOME IN THE HOLLOW |
