William Howard Perry was born, 2 August 1823, in Lewis, Essex, New York, a son of Stephen and Rhoby Edwards Perry. The Perry family joined the LDS Church and moved to Nauvoo, Illinois where William Howard served as a bodyguard to the Prophet Joseph Smith. He said that the Prophet put his hand on a wall and an opening appeared. The Prophet slipped away and the opening closed. The mobbers searched the house but could not find Joseph.
