Show PIONEER CABIN ON GORDON CREEK Photo-Blaine Adams, Layton In his biography, Joseph Warren Wadsworth reported that his team of horses was not afraid to travel the Canyon because of the many trips he took. As a result he was often asked to drive to Ogden for a doctor in case of an emergency. BEN SIMONS—FIRST SETTLER? Some time before the coming of the Mormon Pioneers, Ben Simons, his wife and brother, James, had settled on the Weber River. They were Indians. To what tribe they belonged was a debatable question. Some said they were Shoshoni, others said Utes, and still others claimed they were Cherokee, even half breed Frenchmen. Simons claimed that the Mexican Government had granted them a permit to graze their cattle in the valley. The Simons had a camp in Mountain Green and possibly another in Round Valley. According to the journal of Wilford Woodruff, Simons also had a place on the Bear River where he was once visited by several leaders of the Church. At one time Ben was also host to Colonel Thomas L. Kane, friend and champion of the Latter-day Saints. 9 |
