Show Front L—Joyce, Chloe Jacques Poll, Royden V. Poll, JoAnn Back L--Delbert L., Royal V., Dorothy, Rhea, Edward Lee, Max Dee 1926-1927 Royden and Chloe Jaques Poll came to Mountain Green in 1926, living first at the Utah Power and Light Company Dam in Weber Canyon, where he assisted his brother, William Poll, in maintaining the Dam. From there the family moved to Gateway, St¬rawberry, and Peterson, where he worked on the U.P. Railroad. In Peterson he was made Foreman of the repair crew. He was asked to take a job on the Railroad out of State, but decided that his family needed a permanent home. The Poll family moved to South Weber where Royden took up farming. Royden was born 21 January 1898 in Salt Lake City, a son of Charles Henry and Cora Elizabeth Vine Poll. He grew up in South Weber where he first learned 'readin', 'writin', and 'rithmetic' in the lower school, located in the old Kingston Fort. He was later transferred to the 'upper school' built where the South Weber LDS Ward Chapel now stands. Chloe was born in Uintah, 26 February 1900, to Thomas William and Enma Luciene Bybee Jaques. She attended school in East Layton at the Dawson Hollow School built in 1875. She remembered the old pot bellied stove in the center of the school room and that all the students sipped water from a dipper hung on the wall above a single bucket of water. She also remembered being punished for whispering to a boy next to her. They had to write the word 'SCHUIZZUICHKXZ'. She has never forgotten how to spell the 338 |
