Show JESSIE EDWIN JAMES MILFORD HORACE road with a 50 cents charge for team and wagon and an additional 25 cents for an extra team. He contracted to built two mail stations and provide 120 tons of hay for the Wells Fargo Overland Stage Company traveling through the Canyon. Joshua was timber inspector and paymaster for the Union Pacific Railroad crews and was once held up by gun-toting outlaws while transporting the payroll from Salt Lake to the railroad camp in Mountain Green. In 1871 the Williams sawmill burned to the ground, destroying thousands of feet of lumber. The following year Joshua sent to England for his father, a bro¬ther and sister. The family moved to Ogden and built a home in the vicinity of the present Weber County Library on Jefferson, and again went into the lumber business. He became Ogden's first Fire Chief and dubbed his fire crew the 'Hook and Ladder Comp¬any #1.' In 1874 Joshua aid Annie purchased property in Mountain Green and one year later he constructed the Sacred Heart Academy on 28th Street and the old Catholic Church building. Between 1858 and 1874 Joshua and Annie became parents of 11 children. When the 12th child was born both mother and baby died. One year later Joshua married Hannah Martha Green, who became mother of seven children. Hannah was born in 1857 in Jurys Hook, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Her parents, John and Margaret Kirkman Green, had been converted to the Church by Jesse Haven of Enterprise. Margaret and her children settled in Kaysville where they lived in a one-room shack. In 1867 the Greens moved to Enterprise, Morgan County, where Margaret lived for 30 years. In 1878 Joshua returned to Mountain Green and built a small house near Cotton¬wood Creek. He raised registered livestock and bought a sawmill which was located in Cottonwood Canyon. He sawed ties for Ogden's first street car tracks and also supplied timber for the Weber-Davis Canal. 154 |
