Show In the Canyon he encountered a grizzly bear and in some way was knocked off his horse. George had always been told to lie perfectly still if attacked by a bear and the animal would probably leave him alone. George 'played dead.' The big grizzly began sniffing around, then started to scratch dirt and leaves over his body. George panicked and kicked the bear in the rump. Old Bruin bit the youth on the shoulder and then ambled off. George fled home and the next day he and his father hunted the bear down and killed it. George always had the scar to show his friends, a momento of his encoun¬ter with a grizzly bear. VAL BYRAM AND THE LIONESS Val Byram has had a healthy respect for lions ever since he had an encounter with a lioness and her three kittens in the Fall of while hunting in Cotton¬wood Canyon. Val and two friends had gone to the Canyon for some deer hunting and were staying in a cabin on the Byram land. They left for a day of shooting and in the afternoon the two friends returned to the cabin while Val continued to scout the area in hopes of flushing out a deer. In late afternoon he started back to join his friends. Deciding to take a shortcut, he began making his way through some thick underbrush at the mouth of Brushy Canyon. He was part way through the dense brush when he spied a lioness and three kittens feeding on a deer carcass. She had killed the deer and dragged it into the brush near her 'nest' so the kittens could feed. Quick as a flash the lioness lunged at Val and he shot, killing her instantly. She missed him by a very slim margin. He looked down and found a tiny kitten dead also. It was almost under his feet. He had killed the kitten, too. Val rushed for camp and drove to his father's home in South Weber to report what had happened to the Game Warden. Next day, accompanied by two Wardens, he returned to the scene and found the other two kittens. One of the Wardens attempted to pick up a kitten without his gloves and had 63 L-VAL BYRAM SHOWS KIT THE LIONESS KILLED IN COTTONWOOD CANYON |
