Show The mine road to the Creek was so steep that ore haulers had to 'rough lock' the back wheels of the wagon so they couldn't turn, making the descent much safer for both man and beast. In 1905 Alonzo Van Patton had two sons killed in a snow slide on Durst, which ended mining at the Carbonit Gem. The Van Pattons lived in Ogden where a daughter taught for the Ogden City School System. Pembrokes drove a tunnel about 1,000 feet into the mountain and found nothing. They had a single cylinder engine which ran the compressor. This engine had two fly wheels which measured six feet in diameter, a bore of 10 or 12 inches and a 16 inch stroke. The 'Mormon Chief' shipped two truck loads or ore which ran 37 percent lead with four ounces of silver. Reinhardt Olsen and myself shipped this ore from the Peterson Railroad Station. Two old prospectors who spent much time in Cottonwood were named Troxler and Muncie. One night while sitting in his cabin Troxler heard a scream. He thought it was a woman, and rushed out of the cabin. It was a bright moonlight night and there close to the cabin was a skulking lion. Dick and Frank Hardy' s grandfather owned a ranch in Cottonwood which was later sold to the Chris Schmalz family, who owned a large herd of sheep, which still graze on the summer range in Cottonwood Canyon. One December Dick Stuart and Lorenzo Eddington were working in the Canyon and decided to go home for Christmas. Two days before the 25th they started hiking down the Canyon through the deep snow. It took the two all one day to hike down to the Hardy Ranch one mile below the mines. The next day was spent walking from the Ranch to the main road in Mountain Green. As luck would have it, the two met a man driving a sleigh who took them as far as Peterson, just in time to catch a train for Morgan. They arrived home just in time for the Christmas festivities. —James Compton HALLEY'S COMET has been tumbling through space on its current orbit for at least 2,000 years. It shows no signs of aging and is the only comet whose return is accurately predicted. It does not streak across the sky like a meteor but travels slowly in a 'back ward' motion opposite the earth's rotation. It is the only comet that shows all types of cometary activities, such as shells, jets, streamers flares and dust tails. 59 |
