Show Delightful Chapter in Their Lives 1930 The seven years that Earl and Mar¬vel Robinson spent at the Gateway Store in Weber Canyon, was a delightful chap¬ter in their lives and left them with many fond memories. James Earl Robinson was born in Morgan on 5 June 1908, a son of James L. and Mary R. Watts Robinson. His birth place was the home of his grand¬parents, John Heber and Lenora France Robinson. His childhood was spent on the farm of his father in Mountain Green. It was work to farm the sidehill and very difficult to irrigate and cultivate, but he learned to work very early in life. Earl attended school at Peterson and Morgan. A first grader at Peterson, he was kicked in the face by a colt which left a deep scar on his cheek, barely miss¬ing his eye. Alice Marvel Olsen was born in October of 1911, in Peterson, Utah, a daughter of Ainer Charles John and Anna Elizabeth Grow Olsen. She spent her childhood in Peterson where she attended school. The family moved to West Ogden, to Ogden, and Lewiston, Cache County for five years, then back to West Ogden, or Wilson Lane as it was called. Earl and Marvel met at a dance at the White City Ballroom in Ogden. They were married soon after and moved to a little cabin at the little Gateway store in Weber Canyon owned and operated by his parents. The first winter was bitter cold and the cabin was not insulated. They nearly froze, Marvel remembers. Both Earl and Marvel helped in the store and she and her sister, Itha Robinson, 'car hopped' during the summer months. Earl was employed as a track walker with his territory from Gateway to the Devil's Gate. The couple moved to Midas, Nevada where Earl worked on a ranch. They moved back to Gateway and lived in a larger, better built cabin south of the store. But, their oldest son, was born in 1931 and the family moved to the home of Earl's Uncle Alonzo Robinson. Clair was born in 1937 and the family moved to Ogden, Front L-Marvel, Earl; Carrie, Roberta, Shirley, Clair, Byron, Gary Storrer 346 |
