Show Irven raised hay and grain, milked a herd of cows and raised a flock of chic¬kens. One year he bought an Oldsmobile truck with a long body, put a covering over the top and installed benches along each side. With this truck he hauled students to Morgan High School. Within a year or two the school district bought its own busses and this action put him out of a job. He then used the truck to haul milk for Morgan County farmers to an Ogden dairy. In 1924 Irven sold his share of the ranch to his brother and moved to Mount¬ain Green where he operated the Joshua Williams farm on the bench for one year. The children continued to attend school in Peterson. The Carrigans moved back to Peterson, built a new home and bam and went into the dairy business. They also raised White Leghorn chickens along with a flock of turkeys. This business was carried on for three or four years. When they were half grown the turkeys were moved to a dry farm across the River. Roosts were built and someone had to stay with them all the time to keep them from wandering off. Irven slept in a covered wagon and hung gas lanterns around the area so he could watch his flock. Irven was civic minded, helping to secure telephone service in Peterson by helping to dig the holes and installing the poles. He also assisted in installing a water system for the community. An active worker in the Church, Irven made arrangements for silent movies to be shown in the Ward building and operated the movie camera. Cynthia Jones Carrigan was president of the Peterson Ward Relief Society for a number of years and helped care for the sick and afflicted. Life on the farm was hard and Cynthia carried drinking water from the spring and took care of her home with no modern conveniences. She was a good neighbor and friend to all who came to her door. Cynthia died, 13 March 1957, at the age of 57. Irven lived until 24 October 1949, dying at the age of 73. Both are buried in Peterson. —Josephine Carrigan Bohman DID YOU KNOW—- That lightening strikes the earth about 100 times every second, that the average lightening bolt is only four inches wide, but can stretch across the sky for 40 miles and generate six times as much energy as all the power stations in the country put together? 310 |
