Show later moving to Washington Terrace where they stayed for about five years. Earl worked at several jobs, one of than being in a warehouse where he 'pound¬ed sugar' in barrels. The sugar had hardened up and had to be broken down for sale. The couple began working for the old Ogden Arsenal during World War II as explosive operators. When their daughter, Shirley, was born, Marvel quit her job and Earl trans¬ferred to Hill Air Force Base where he worked until his retirement. In the mean¬time they had purchased a home in South Ogden. While living at Gateway Earl and Marvel had many exciting experiences with travelers driving through the Canyon. One time they rushed to the rescue of a bus load of passengers when their bus 'took to the river' in an effort to miss an auto¬mobile loaded with a couple and several children. Another time they helped pull two teen¬age boys out of the river when they rounded a corner too fast and crashed their car into the Weber River in front of the store. An amusing incident happened late one night when a truckload of cabbages took the corner too fast and tipped over in front of the cabin, sending heads of cabbages rolling in all directions. Earl and Marvel ended up with enough cabbage to last them the entire Winter. Earl loved to fish and hunt and took his family on trips each Summer. He also took his mother, Mary Robinson, on the river to fish. He loved the great outdoors and taught Marvel the names of plants and trees growing in the canyon. He took great pains J to show her the poisonous plants. Earl died at his South Ogden home in 1939. Marvel is still living at the same address as of 1985. —Alice Marvel Robinson, South Ogden BUS IN THE RIVER 347 |
