WINTER COMES TO THE GATEWAY PICNIC GROVE Photo—Letha Jaques Smith Exciting Moments at the Gateway Store Shortly after Earl Robinson married Marvel Olson, the young couple moved to one of the little cabins at the Gateway Grove, owned and operated by Earl's father, James L. Robinson and his wife, Mary. Marvel remembers exciting moments at the Gateway Store: We were married during the great depression and jobs and money were very hard to get. After we were settled in the little cabin, Earl began working for the Union Pacific Railroad Company as a track walker on swing shift, watching for sli¬des and rocks and slides which might get onto the track and derail a train. Camp Gateway was a pretty little place with a beautiful grove of Box Elder trees which made a bower of shade for campers and picnickers. Spring, Summer and Fall were beautiful seasons of the year, but the Winters were bitter cold with plenty of snow to make life miserable. Camp Gateway was a convenience store with a gas station and picnic area. It nestled at the base of a tall mountain on the north and the river on the south and west. The Union Pacific Railroad tracks and the highway bordered the grove on the south. During Summer months the grove was beautiful with a carpet of green grass under the trees. Through the years, Earl and his father worked to improve the camp grounds. 82
