It was not a fancy home, but its thick walls made it cool in the Sumner and cozy warm during frigid Winter months. George was a farmer and raised hay and grain. He also milked a herd of dairy cows and at one time drove the school wagon which transported Mountain Green stud¬ents to the Peterson School. On one occasion, while working on a hay bailer, his leg was badly mangled. George, who was physically strong, refused to have his leg amputated. As a result the leg developed abcess type sores which plagued him the rest of his life. In the Valley, water became scarce as the Sumner advanced and George joined with his neighbors in developing the Northwest Irrigation Company. A reservoir was constructed on the Parrish property and water ditched from Cottonwood Creek. Others involved were the Parrish and Rollins families. According to his stepson, Leroy France, George was rather headstrong with a quick temper. This weakness was offset by his humor and joviality. Nettie had a streak of humor and loved nothing better than to play pranks on her family and the neighbors. George and Nettie were not active in the Mountain Green Ward but were good neighbors, ready to help anyone at any time. Nettie was an excellent cook and learned to make do with very little. On 18 July 1909 the parents and four children were baptized into the Church. 222
