Show They remembered that the only telephone in the entire community was in their ranch home in Mountain Green. In emergencies the neighbors came to the ranch house to telephone for help, or send out messages. When Hyrum Stewart died the ranch became the property of his son, Cleve Stewart, who was not interested in the business. The place was sold to Lovell Ostler and the Whatcott family returned to live in Fillmore, Alfred was hired by the government as a trapper, a job he kept for several years. Two more children, Thora and Idonna, were born in Fillmore. The family moved to Ogden where Alfred worked for the Ogden Railway Express. He worked for a while for Frank Pakman, who herded his sheep in Colorado. In 1937 the Whatcott family moved to Ogden where Alfred was employed by the Ogden Railway Express. They attended the Ogden Second Ward and again became involved in Church work. The family later moved to Salt Lake City where Alfred died April 30, 1961. Edna lived until March 12, 1966, when she also died in Salt Lake City. Whatcott Family, Cedar City DID YOU KNOW THAT...? Miles Goodyear met President Brigham Young's party on July 10, 1847, and tried to persuade him to take the Weber Canyon route into the Great Salt Lake Valley and settle near him in the Ogden area. But the Pioneers were skeptical of Goodyear's motives and decided to travel the Emigration Canyon route. Thus Salt Lake became the center of activities of the Church. President Young actually said, "It is enough, this is the right place," in¬stead of "This is the place." In 1847 the Salt Lake Valley was actually on for¬eign soil. It was still part of Mexico. The first Pioneers entered the valley on July 22 and 23, instead of the 24th. Crops of potatoes, corn, buckwheat and beans were planted on the 23rd and on July 24 the men dug an irrigation ditch which brought water from City Creek to their newly planted seed. Three weeks after entering the Valley 71 men headed back to Winter Quarters to get their families. In August President Young and 107 others also returned to Winter Quarters. They did not return until shortly after the seagulls saved that first crop from destruction by 'Mormon' crickets. 296 |
