Show ELIZA ANN HARDY ABIAH WADSWORTH No Picture Available PHOEBE AUGUSTA HUBBARD In 1850 the family of Abiah Wadsworth moved to Mountain Green where they built a log house and shop where Abiah could follow his trade of carpenter. Abiah was born 25 May 1810, in Lincolnville, Waldo, Maine, the son of Sedate and Susan Hassen Wadsworth. His father and brothers were carpenters and skilled ship builders. Abiah followed this trade all his life. He was 21 when he married Elisa Ann Hardy, daughter of Joseph and Elisabeth (Betsy) Thorndyke Hardy. She was born 18 April 1816, in Passamaquiddie, New Bruns¬wick, Nova Scotia. The Hardy family later moved to Maine. After their marriage on 25 February 1831, Abiah went into business for him¬self. Having heard the Gospel preached by Elder William Hyde, the young couple was baptized 29 December 1840. In 1842 Abiah and Elisa Ann moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, along with three of her brothers and their families. Abiah was attending the meeting when Apostle Brigham Young spoke with the voice of the Prophet Joseph Smith following his mart¬yrdom. Abiah was deeply impressed. When the call came to leave Nauvoo the Wadsworth family crossed the Mississ¬ippi River and set up camp in Montrose. Abiah was called to return to Nauvoo and help guard the Temple. The Wadsworths and Hardys moved to Salem where they lived for about a year. Abiah and his son, Joseph Warren, worked for local farmers in Salem and received in pay a team of horses, wagon and supplies. The two families left for Winter Quarters, Iowa where they lived for a while then traveled on to the Salt Lake Valley. They arrived there 10 May 1851. They drove a good outfit of five yoke of oxen, one team of ponies, four cows, three wagons and their household goods. They traveled with the Abraham Day Company. 119 |
