Show we opened the store so the hapless boys could call for help. One Fourth of July we had a huge crowd at the grove and Earl's sister, Itha (Billie) had 'hopped' cars all day and we were exhausted. About 4:00 p.m. I was standing outside the store when I heard a terrible crash. I looked around just in time to see a big Union Pacific Bus crash into the River just west of the store. A man and his family, driving down the Canyon, de¬cided to turn his car around on the narrow, winding road, just as the bus rounded a sharp curve. The bus driver noted the car was filled with children and a woman holding a tiny baby. In an effort to avoid hitting the car he made a split-second decision and opted to take a chance in the River. He had 13 passengers aboard. An unlucky number, did you say? The heavy bus tilted on the steep bank but did not tip over. Water came up the sides of the bus and the passengers had to climb out through the windows. Two elderly women were shook up and frightened but none of the passengers suffered any injuries. The two were taken to an Ogden hospital where they spent the night, then went on their way the next morning. Camp Gateway served many times as a 'rescue mission' for unwary drivers who did not or would not heed warning signs freely posted on the narrow, treacherous road through Weber Canyon. It was hard work to serve the public but at times it was greatly rewarding, especially when our customers told us how much they enjoyed the Canyon and partic¬ularly the clean, pleasant camp ground. When electricity finally came to the Canyon it was a relief not to have the kerosene lamps to fill and their sooty chimneys to clean and polish. In addition, we were not forced to haul ice from Ogden which really made a change for the better. Another great improvement was when we piped water from the spring to our cabin. No more hauling buckets of water through the heat of Summer and the bitter Winter! We really loved living in the Canyon at Gateway Store. We made many wonderful friends and learned many things which we would have never learned any other way. It was a delightful chapter in our lives. —Marvel Robinson, Ogden 84 |
