Show Caroline Williams Nichols 1878 When my grandfather, John Nicholas, died in 1878 he left my grandmother Caroline with three small children to raise, Rose, Leslie and Frances, She leaned on her brother, Josh¬ua Williams, for help. With such a large family of his own, he still welcomed his sister and family, along with his brother, John, his wife, Mary, and children, Mark, Rose and Emily Williams. My father, Leslie (Sonny) Nicholas, enjoy¬ed growing up at the Rose Hill Cottage until he was 15 years of age. The Rose Hill Cottage must have bustled with excitement because it served as a hotel and focal point for the community, with music and dancing for entertainment. It was also the stage coach and Pony Express resting station. Sonny walked over a lot of this land in Mountain Green because he worked as a sheep herder for his Uncle Joshua and the Bohmans. He was an expert marksman with a rifle and was barred from shooting galaries in Ogden because of his expert marksmanship. He practiced shooting squirrels and coyotes while on the sheep range. My father told me about a band of some 200 Indians who camped where Verl Lamb now resides. He watched them get drunk and go on the warpath. On one such spree a squaw cams running to Rose Hill Cottage and asked that his mother, Caroline, hide her because she was afraid for her life. She was hid in the oat bin of the granary and covered with oats. The squaw stayed for several days before she dared go back to the tribe. A little later the Chief came to the farm and thanked Caroline for saving the squaw's life. One of the young bucks was furious because my father had hid the squaw and grabbed the white boy and began to drag him toward the River where he planned to drown Sonny. Alma Anderson, Joshua's hired man, saw the fracas and heard the boy cry for help. He forced the Indian to release Sonny. My father remembered walking with his mother along the tracks to the Peterson store. When they reached the Indian stockade the red men began shooting at the two. 186 CAROLINE WILLIAMS NICHOLAS |
