Show to the Great Salt Lake Valley, trudging alongside his mother's covered wagon. They were led by Captain Allen Boren. They arrived in Salt Lake City in 1852, then moved to Provo where Barbara bought good land for 25 cents per acre. The land was located near the present site of Brigham Young University. Later, the family moved to Bountiful for a short time then moved on to East Weber on the Weber River. From 1869 to 1874, Barbara, now 72 years old, was keener of the toll bridge near Devil's Gate in Weber Canyon. She collected 50 cents for each team and wagon which crossed the bridge. It was a lone and sometimes frightening job for a widow. The toll funds were used to help keep the road in repair. Doc (William H.H.) was employed at the Bybee sawmill on Jacobs Creek. He worked on various construction jobs, especially for the railroad prior to the driv¬ing of the Golden Spike. He worked at a sawmill for a man named Durst, in Cottonwood Canyon, and worked with pick and shovel helping to build the first road around Devil's Gate in Weber Canyon. His pay was 18 pounds of flour for each day of labor. His lunch was a slice of bread spread with molasses. On January 24, 1862, Doc married Lucene Bird Bybee in East Weber, a daughter of Byram and Betsy Lane Bybee, she was born in Barron County, Kentucky (She called it Kanetuck!). Lucene was a descendent of James and David Bybee, Scottish Highlanders, who came to Ken¬tucky in the early part of the 16th Century. Betsy was a second cousin to General Robert E. Lee. Lucene spent her youth in Kentucky. Her family moved to Indiana, joined the LDS Church in 1839, and moved to Illinois in 1842. Lucene was an ex¬cellent nurse and mid-wife, rendering valuable service to the sick and afflicted. Doc was an old-time fiddler and for many years he and two brothers, Will and Dave, played for dances and socials wherever they lived. Later his son, William Allen, became adept at playing the guitar and father and son entertained with old time music and song, much to the delight of family and friends. 167 TWINS-ANNIE LAURIE AND DAVID |
