Show the mouth of Weber Canyon. It was here that David Bowman Bybee met and married Adelia Higley, daughter of Myron Spencer and Priscilla Ebberson Higley. Adelia Higley was born in Leeds, Ontario, Canada, 23 June 1836. The Higley family moved to Port Leydon, New York, where they were con¬verted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Elder Orson Hyde. With a large company of Saints, the fam¬ily moved to Benton Fort, Illinois, Here they found it very difficult to make an adequate living. Adelia's father was a very religious man. Her grandfather had been a Methodist Minister. While at Benton Fort the eldest daughter, Clarissa, met and married a very wealthy man who gave her parents two ox teams and two wagons for their trip across the plains. The Higley family was ready for the long journey. Upon reaching the Great Salt Lake Valley the Higleys were sent to Centerville, Davis County. After a short time there they moved to Uintah, where Adelia and David Bowman were married. Good farm land was scarce and so was irrigation water. The Bybee families decided to try their luck in Grafton, on the Santa Clara River in Southern Utah. The move was not a profitable one and David Bowman moved his family back to Uintah. In 1857 he married Mary Elizabeth Penrod, daughter of John and Barbara Tope Penrod. Mary Elizabeth, born 10 January 1842 in Jackson County, Illinois, was about 14 years old when the wedding took place. Three years later the two Bybee families moved to Mountain Green, Morgan Cou¬nty, settling on land near Cottonwood Canyon. Here David Bowman operated a sawmill. He signed a contract with Fort Douglas to supply the Fort with cord wood and badly needed charcoal. He also manufactured and sold tan bark, used in dyeing shoe leather. In October of 1874 Elizabeth Adelaide Rice became the third wife of David Bowman Bybee. She was born 18 March 1856 in Farmington, a daughter of William Kelsey and Lucy Witter Rice, She taught school in Mountain Green. 147 Front L. -DAVID BOWMAN AND BYRAM LEVI Back L. - JOHN McCANN AND ROBERT LEE |
