THORNLEY GROVE IN ALL ITS GOLDEN SPLENDOR Photo-Dee Marston, Ogden Thornley Grove -- Favorite Camping Ground Ever since I was a small child I have had a great fondness for, and loving memories in my heart for the small community of Mountain Green, Morgan County. Some of my earliest recollections are going up Weber Canyon in a covered wagon filled with straw ticks for beds and hay for horses. Also enough food to last as long as we stayed—four to five days. My dear mother would bake bread, two crust pies, churn butter and gather eggs along with vegetables, enough to last while we were camping. We went prepared to eat! My beloved grandfather, Joseph Bodily, was a close friend of John W. Thornley of Layton and Kaysville. Grandfather had permission to use the Thornley cattle grazing grounds—known as Thornley Grove. It was located on the south side of the Weber River. The grove was large enough to accomodate grandfather's large group of married sons and daughters and their families. Sometimes half of the Syracuse LDS Ward people would be there. My grandfather was a wonderful camp tender, and kept everything in spick and span order. There was a cold, clean spring nearby. Grandfather used sheet metal to shape a trough for water to trickle down into a large earthen crock, so we had 87
