Show In about 1927 the farm was rented to Philip Huber and the France family moved to Elkhurst, Wyoming, where they lived in a section house. They stayed there about one year. Groceries were brought in by train. In this isolated spot there was no place to go for entertainment or even neighboring. Vera remembers that the weather was so bitter cold that even the jack rabbits froze to death. One year's experience there was enough. The family returned to their Mountain Green farm. Sometime after 1934 the land was sold to Stephen Winchester and the France family moved to Peterson where they rented a house. Darrell continued to work as a railroad secion hand. A farm was purchased in Porterville and the family moved there. This farm produced hay, grain and a vegetable garden. Darrell kept a few cows, other farm animals and a small herd of sheep. While living in Porterville Vera became an 'angel of mercy' to the sick and aflicted, going to various homes where she was always welcome in times of trial. She also assisted in 'laying out the dead', a necessary service before the day of modern mortuary service. Vernon was injured in a freak accident while bicycling along the country road. A hay bailer struck him which eventually resulted in his death in May of 1953. He was 21 years old. Two days after Christmas in 1966, Darrel died at an Ogden hospital. He was buried in the South Morgan Cemetery. Vera and Donna continued to live on the Por¬terville farm until 1979 when they sold out and moved to Ogden. —Laveria and Donna France FLASH! Los Angeles was founded in California by Spanish settlers who called the settlement El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora La Reina de Los Angeles de Porcuincula. The year was 1781. OLD FRANCE HOMESTEAD 331 |
