Show ADELIA HIGLEY BYBEE DAVID BOWMAN BYBEE MARY ELIZABETH PENROD David Bowman Bybee Builder and Church Leader David Bowman Bybee and his families lived in Mountain Green for 23 years, giving generously of their time, talents and means for the upbuilding of the little community. He was father of 32 children. He was born 17 September, 1832, in Kentucky, a son of Byram Lee and Betsy Lane Bybee. His parents were sturdy pioneers who crossed the plains in 1852. Captain of the wagon train was Reddick Allred. While living in Nauvoo he heard the rushing of wings at the dedication of the Nauvoo Temple. It had a lasting and inspiring effect on him all his life. On the long trek across the plains, David Bowman and a friend had a frighten¬ing experience which he told of many times. The two youths decided to leave the wagon train and do a little hunting, expecting to catch up with the slow moving wagon caravan before nightfall. The boys became lost. At dusk a pack of wolves picked up their scent and took up the chase. The boys had an old blunderbus that had to be loaded with ramrod, buckshot and black powder. It was tricky business. They kept the wolves at bay by firing guns at intervals, The two huddled together and the wolves circled them, with glaring eyes and bared teeth. Back in camp the families became worried and sent out a search party. Following the direction of the shots the rescue team came upon the young hunt¬ers. They were down to their last shot. It was a happy reunion. Upon reaching Salt Lake City the wagon train was met by President Brigham Young and made comfortable for the night. Next day the families were assigned to settle in various directions. The Bybee family was sent to East Weber (Uintah) at 146 |
