THE FIRST SCHOOL BUILDING 1860 One of the first things the early settlers did was to erect a log building east of Gordon Creek for use as a community center. Here church services were conducted, radin' writin' and 'rithmetic were taught, funerals were held, and its rough walls reverberated with the laughter and music of socials and old time dances. Parents took turns teaching the young students who sat on rough logs and all read out of the same book—a Bible or Book of Mormon or perhaps a precious book carried across the plains by the loving hands of a caring mother. About 1872 the settlers had voted to erect a new building for church and school activities. The little log structure had served the people well for 12 years, but it was soon dis¬covered that there was need for more room and a better building. A tax was levied on the people and the Union Pacific Railroad Company was also assesed for funds with which to erect the proposed building. The contract was awarded to David Bowman Bybee, who owned and operated a saw mill. Costing a little over $1000, the structure was 25 by 30 feet. This building served as a school until 1908 when the Morgan County Com¬mission held an election and people voted to have their children educated in the Peterson School. This district also included students from Enterprise. For children in the west end of the County it meant a ride of ten miles round trip each day, in a covered school wagon, which took one and a half hours travel each way. In 1914 Mountain Green Ward members voted to build a new chapel. It was a tremendous undertakng for the small congregation.
