Show live with Kathleen and Alma so she could continue her schooling in Salt Lake City. In the Spring of 1912, Eric, 14, rode his bicycle to Mountain Green and got a job on Jim William's farm. He never forgot the old billie goat that was as good as a watch dog. No one dared go near the critter except Jim and his son, Elwood. Arthur and Bill worked summers for William Parrish and always claimed that the Parrishes were like another father and mother to the family. Jessie was anxious to purchase a farm for her boys and arranged to sell her home in Salt Lake. The deal was made and Arthur and Eric traveled to Sandy to look their newly acquired farm over. All they found was a parcel of land covered with rocks and sand. Through a friend, Bishop Whitaker, the deal was called off and Jessie retained her home in Salt Lake. In 1915 Arthur and Eric leased the William Parrish ranch in Mountain Green for five years. Jessie sold her Salt Lake home and she and Bill moved to the Moun¬tain Green home. Arthur joined the Army and served in World War I. The family was active in the Mountain Green Ward with Jessie serving as organ¬ist in the Relief Society Presidency and providing solos for Sacrament Meetings when needed. In the Fall the boys worked on threshing crews and did much hunting and fishing in order to provide more food for the table. When the Brewster family of Canada moved to Salt Lake City to live, Eric court¬ed and married their daughter, Vera. He bought a 40 acre farm in East Layton and planted an orchard. After living in a log house for six years they built a brick home and raised a family of four children. Eric was made Superintendent of the Uintah Ward Sunday School in 1944 and in 1955 he and Vera served a Mission to the Lamanite people. Arthur returned from the service, settled in Centerville and married Norma Horsley. He operated a garage repair shop. The couple had six children. Bill moved to California, married Josephine Hamby and had two children. He played banjo in an orchestra and worked as a commercial artist. He was divorced and married Emma Jackson and they were parents of three children. His hobby is writing poetry. Alice graduated from LDS Business College and was once secretary to Brother Joseph F. Merrill. She married Laban Gunderson and they were parents of two daugh¬ters. Jessie Ann moved from Mountain Green to Salt Lake City and became involved in temple work and genealogy. She served as organist in the Sugar House Ward. She died at the home of Kathleen in December of 1924. Her children declared that she was a noble and brave woman and left a posterity of 21 grandchildren and 67 great grandchildren. —Mrs. James Potter of Layton 292 |
