Show the balance of $201.97 on or before 1 July 1916. In a 10 February 1916 meeting, the minutes refer to cleaning the new building and how to raise money to pay for new seats. At that time there were probably few¬er than 15 families in the Ward. Building the Chapel under those circumstances was a great achievement. By 1927 the Chapel was paid for and dedicatory services were conducted on 19 June at 5:15 p.m. with Apostle George Albert Smith in attendance and presiding. The minutes read as follows: Bishop Joseph A. Parrish conducted. Opening song, page 104, "The Spirit of God Like a Fire Is Burning" Prayer: Orson P. Matthews Song 246: Truth Reflects Upon Our Senses Summary Report: Joseph A. Parrish, Bishop President Heiner spoke on "The Latter-day Saints as a Blessed People" Solo: Sister Warren Porter Quartet: Milton Ward members Apostle Smith spoke on "How Blessed Are the Latter-day Saints" Apostle George Albert Smith offered the Dedicatory Prayer Closing Song: Doxology Benediction: Albert Whittier As soon as the Chapel had been finished, church services were held there. The Chapel Room was divided into classrooms with curtains hung on wires, and the drone of teacher's voices could be clearly heard despite the curtain walls. The build¬ing was heated with a furnace in the basement, which functioned until it was flood¬ed each Spring with high water from Cottonwood Creek. Less than 18 months after the building was dedicated it was abandoned so far as church activities were concerned. The Mountain Green Ward was again disbanded and members again become part of the Peterson Ward. The beloved Church Building and Grounds became the property of the Rollins family. It served for a time as a home, then a storage building for grain and other farm products. It was sold to a Mr. Vincent who in turn sold it to a Taylor family in Weber County. A fast food store was erected in front of the building and the Chapel was remodeled for a dance hall. Dr. Dave Smedley became the next owner. In about 1940, neglected and violat¬ed by vandals, the heavy snow caved the roof in. The walls collapsed and most of the sandstone blocks, so carefully hewed by loving hands, disappeared. 45 |
