Show huge animal literally 'fell at their feet', or so close that they could have poked him with their gun barrels. He struggled to his feet, then bounded down the steep hillside, ripping the brush and bushes to pieces with his teeth, in his rage and agony. His screeching had now turned to a deep growl. The two men ran after him and Al began clubing the bear with his gun. They had both forgot¬ten to bring more ammunition. B.H. carried an old muzzle loading blunderbuss. It was pitch dark and all they had was a knife. Al spoke in a whisper, "Don't you think we had better get out of here?" B.H. answered, "You bet I do!" They didn't waste any time but ran to their horses and rode pell mell to the ranch. When daylight came all the ranch hands rush¬ed to the scene of the shooting. Lying square on his back, with all four legs sticking straight up in the air, was Bruin, the Grizz¬ly, stark and stiff in death! The men built a drag of Quaking Aspens and rolled the bear onto it. Then with ropes tied to the drag and fastened to their saddle horns, Bruin's remains were hauled triumphantly to the ranch. He tipped the scales at more than 550 pounds. B.H. and Alma had become heros of the day. The only thing of value about the grizzly was his hide. B.H. sold his half to Alma who, in turn, sold it to a third party. The new owner cut the hide up and made a harness for his team. He told B.H. and Alma that he was right proud of that harness. Brigham Henry Roberts (B.H.) was born in 1857 in Wolverhampton, England. His parents were separated and his mother, who had joined the Church, emigrated to America when he was five years old, leaving him in care of foster parents. When he was 10 he also emigrated to Zion, and began working in rough mining camps until his mid-teens. His only formal schooling was one year at the Univer¬sity of Deseret. For a time he lived with Sheriff James Hyram Baird and family in Davis County, where he was taught the blacksmithing trade. Several times he was deputized and GRIZZLY BEAR-The largest and most powerful carnivores living on earth. 61 |
