Show A short time later Sheriff E.E. Butters organized a mountain search. The plan was to gather on Durst Mountain before lunch time on the designated day. Walt and I decided to participate. We saddled up and rode up 'Devil's Hollow' just south of Enterprise, to the top of the ridge. Just as we reached the head of Devil's Hollow a group of riders out in ahead of us and Walt said, "That's Sheriff Butters on the big bay horse." At this late date I can't remember just how many riders got to Durst Mountain, but I would guess between 15 and 20. Some distance beyond the base of the Mountain we could see a sheep camp, road, wagon and two horses. The sheriff directed us to that place. The sheep herder said that there was someone in the nearby timber who kept stealing his food. We organized a search of the nearby area and picked up our man sitting quietly under a tree. He seemed glad that he had been found. The man was placed in the sheep herder's wagon and taken to Peterson. That's the last I heard of him. Who he was is anybody's guess. —Dr. A. Russell Croft HISTORICAL SIDELIGHTS When Abraham Lincoln was elected president his bank account showed that he had $601.00. When Abraham Lincoln was elected president he had exactly $601.00 in the bank. By the time Benjamin Franklin was 42 years old he had made enough money to enable him to retire -- and devote the remainder of his life to public service. In 1889 President Benjamin Harrison put up the first tree to ever grace the White House. George Washington never signed the Declaration of Independence. When the famous document was signed he was in New York, directing his troops against the British during the Revolutionary War. George Washington had two ice cream freezers installed in his Mount Vernon home. He was the only president inaugurated in two cities — New York City in 1789 and Philadelphia in 1793. 70 |
